How to Make a Windsurf Booster Antenna for WiFi

The Windsurf booster is a home-made parabolic reflector for a WiFi router. You can use a computer and everyday household items to create this reflector. When you place the Windsurf booster around the WiFi router antenna, it reflects a focused wireless signal in the direction that the booster is pointed. This inexpensive modification can help direct and strengthen a WiFi Internet signal that needs to reach a long distance.

Go to the Ez-12 Parabolic Reflector Template website (see References).

Scroll to the bottom of the page and locate the Windsurf template image.

Right-click on the image and choose “Save Image As” to save the template to your computer.

Place heavyweight paper in your printer, such as a sheet of card stock. This paper should be strong enough to make a durable reflector, but thin enough for your printer to print on.

Double-click on the template image on your computer to open it.

Choose “Print” from the image toolbar and print the image as a “Full Page Photo.” You need to print the template as large as you can on the full sheet of paper without cutting off any of the design.

Cut out both pieces of the printed template. Be careful to cut as close to the template shape as you can.

Cut and open the slits on the rectangular piece of the template.

Cut a piece of tinfoil the same size as the rectangular piece and glue it to the back of the piece.

Insert the tabs on the “Windsurfer” piece of the template into the open slots of the rectangular piece of the template. This will cause the rectangular piece of the template to curve inward and complete the Windsurfer reflector.

Slide the Windsurfer reflector down on your antenna. The curved rectangular piece should be positioned behind the antenna, rotated to face the direction that you want to focus your WiFi signal. The “Windsurfer” piece of the template should be in front of the antenna to hold it in place.
